Survive: Writing A Last Minute Paper

December 15th 2007 02:30
There you are again, drinking a beer and watching Robot Chicken. Hey, do you not have a term paper due tomorrow? Yeah, you do. Oh snap. Better get to it. Do not get frustrated and smash your computer! You will need it. Let me help you out a bit.
Not Correct!

The easiest thing to do is just take an old paper you have written for another class in the past, and submit it. Of course this only works in particular situations. Honestly, I have never been able to do this, but I have seen many people pull this off before, and get good marks, too. If you are like me and can not do this, all hope is not lost! Read on.

Find a peaceful place to start typing. If you do not have a portable computer, make your dorm room peaceful, by shutting everyone else out. You will need to focus hard on this one. Get snacks and caffeine so you will not have to get up. You may also want to use the restroom before you sit down. This is going to be a long night.

At my old job, I once met a professional journalist who had made it quite successfully. He gave me a word of advice that has helped me ever since. He said to me, “Write what you know.” So I shall pass this tasty tidbit of information on to you. Writing comes a lot easier if you write about something you are interested in, especially passionate about. You will write a lot faster, too, because more thoughts will come to your head as you write, which can get a bit confusing at times, which is why you…

Start with an outline, before you start on your paper. A simple way to do an outline is this:

I. Intro
II. Body Paragraph I
a. Information
b. Information
c. Information
III. Body Paragraph II
a. Information
b. Information
c. Information
IV. Body Paragraph III
a. Information
b. Information
c. Information
V. Conclusion

Of course you don’t write “Body Paragraph” or “Information” on the outline. You write what each paragraph is about, then the information underneath.

Most importantly, do NOT mess with the formatting. Most, if not all professors, have guidelines on how they want their paper formatted. Do not try changing margins or a bigger font size. Your professor will most likely see through this immediately and take points off, and we are shooting for the most points we can possibly get. We are writing this last minute, remember? Do not risk anything.

Good luck on your paper, now get writing!

hehe, I like your photo and how it's 'not correct'. Thank you for clearing that up for me

That's pretty funny! I actually have old papers from High School that my mom has in a box. I can basically adapt some of them into college level and turn them in.

If not, you can read a bunch of sample papers online and combine them into one. Make sure to use your own words though or you are pretty screwed.

OnlineWriter,
Using your own words is definitely a must. It's too easy for a professor to just take one sentence out of your paper and type it in to google to find where you stole it from.

Here's what I learned in college: Align left (I think it was align left, it's been awhile), use Courier New font - they both make your paper longer. Of course, if your Prof calls for a number count instead of number of pages, these tips won't work.

Patricia,
I had no idea those made your paper longer. Thanks for the tips!

Wow, that was lightning quick!

They work. Take a paper and do what I said and watch it grow into more pages. It's a MS Word miracle!

PS - It's actually "Align justified." With the new version of MS Word I think it's "justified medium."

Patricia,
Hahaha and it doesn't break any rules, in most cases! I could have used this info when I was still in college.
P.S. I've been known to be quick =P

I know. I'm real good at finding loopholes.
