Survive: Cramming For A Last Minute Term Paper
December 15th 2007 02:28
Well, it is getting close to finals. In fact, they start next week for many, if they have not started already. If you are anything like me, you will be cramming last minute for your tests, and writing your papers last minute. I knew a guy who showed up for class, forgot the paper was due, left the class and wrote it in the library. He showed back up at the end of class and handed it in. The professor asked, “Weren’t you here earlier?” This friend of mine simply stated “No. Have a good summer” and left. Today I will discuss how to cram for a test.
It is midnight, you have been watching Robot Chicken and drinking beer, and you just realized you have your exam tomorrow. What are you going to do? First things first, find material. Get out your text books, any notes you have taken, and anything else you have got that could help you study. If you do not have your texts books, you are on your own with that, but I can help you score some notes if you neglected to take them, also. All you need to do is hunt down someone from class. Usually they will let you photocopy their notes (hand copying will take too long, and we do not have time at this point). Go ahead and ask them for tips, too. Ask what they think the main points are; the most important parts to study. Try and pick a reliable person who pays attention in class so you will get the best notes.
In Florida, we have this standardized test everyone has to take multiple times in their life, called the FCAT. It’s a lot like the Iowa Test. They emphasized on the reading part to read only the first paragraph, last paragraph, and first sentence of every paragraph in between (in order). That way you read only half the material but still know what the heck is going on.
Make sure you have a good place to study. That party you were at when you remembered you have the exam…not a good place to study. In fact, do not even go back to your dorm, even if it is empty. There are too many distractions. You want to find a quiet place, like the library or maybe a coffee shop. A coffee shop is good because you have caffeine and food right there in front of you. Of course, you have to pay for it. Going to the library or somewhere else quiet and generally empty would be best. Bring gum, coffee, energy drinks, gum, and snacks to keep you alert while you study.
The day of the exam: If you eat breakfast every morning, you want to definitely eat today. Wear comfortable clothes. Dress in layers or bring enough of a jacket to make sure you are comfortable. You do not want to be too hot or too cold. Make sure to bring extra of whatever you need for the exam, be it paper, pens, pencils, or whatever. Make sure you are still studying all the way up to the point where the professor says to put your notes away! You want to get as much information in your head as possible. Try not to listen to, or discuss, anything with any other students. They could accidentally give you bad information, getting you mixed up with all the information you have spent the last twenty four hours cramming into your head.
Well, you have done all you can do. Stay focused and good luck. I hope this helps. Remember, we never spoke.
